Komunidad’s Siargao project is one of Asia-Pacific region’s Steward Leadership 25 awardees

Komunidad’s Climate-Resilient Siargao Project was named as one of the Stewardship Leadership awardees for 2024.

Steward Leadership 25 (SL25), now in its third year, recognizes 25 projects of for-profit organizations in the Asia-Pacific region that “have demonstrated resolute actions to drive profitable growth by addressing the very challenges that threaten humanity.”

“Steward Leadership is the genuine desire and persistence to create a collective better future for stakeholders, society, future generations, and the environment. In business, this means pursuing a stewardship purpose which aims to create win-win prosperity where in employees, shareholders and society-at-large all thrive together,” it said on its website.

Komunidad’s Siargao project was completed in April this year after its 15-month run, where coastal communities received guidance from Komunidad on how to recover from the ravages of Super Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai) and to become climate-resilient communities.

The project refined and improved the disaster risk reduction and management strategies of Surigao del Norte municipal governments through science-based knowledge and tools. It was done with backing of funds from GSMA, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

In Komunidad’s entry written by its CEO and Founder Felix Ayque, he said: “Komunidad aims to convert pilot municipalities into long-term customers for its climate tools, having already achieved success with two of Siargao’s nine municipalities. The goal is to reach 50 LGUs across the Philippines, offering affordable packages to support climate resilience. Looking ahead, Komunidad plans to diversify its product offerings to serve additional sectors such as energy, real estate and education.”

Projects that made it to the list were picked by Stewardship Asia Centre, “a non-profit organization dedicated to helping business and government leaders, investors, and individuals activate steward leadership,” it said on its website.

The winners are decided based on Purpose, Impact and Scale, Materiality, Additionality, Financial Sustainability, Innovation, and Future Plans.

Four other projects from the Philippines that made it to the list are “Bridging rural health gaps with technology and access” by Reach52, “Enabling small farmers with training and market access” by Jollibee Foods Corporation, “Recreating migratory bird habitat lost to airport construction” by San Miguel Aerocity, and “Transforming plastic waste into sustainable building solutions” by Ayala Land Inc.
