The Challenge
Super Typhoon Rai (local name: Odette) caused billions in damages and significant impacts on communities across the Philippines, including Megaworld’s properties. This event highlighted the urgent need for enhanced climate resilience in their developments, prompting Megaworld to take decisive action. The challenge was not only to address the immediate aftermath but also to prepare for future extreme weather events.
Megaworld needed a solution that would provide hyper-localized weather data to enhance safety, improve operational efficiency, and support strategic decision-making across its townships. Specifically, Megaworld required a solution to:
- Identify optimal locations for installing weather sensors across their townships, ensuring reliable internet connectivity for seamless data gathering and transmission.
- Integrate detailed weather data into their sales analytics to gain insights into how weather conditions impacted sales, enabling the company to optimize strategies and improve overall performance.
- Provide residents with accurate and localized weather information to better prepare for and respond to extreme weather events.
To further strengthen their climate resilience strategy, Megaworld established the Township Analytics and Technology Lab (TAT Lab) in July 2023, the first data science lab in the Philippines led by a property development business, to build climate-smart and future-ready townships.

- Analytics and Insights Komunidad developed advanced analytics tools that correlated weather patterns with Megaworld’s sales data, allowing them to identify trends and optimize their sales strategies. In addition, daily weather reports and Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) reports were provided, keeping the community well-informed. Residents received SMS and Viber alerts for weather changes, lightning impacts, and dangerous thunderstorms, significantly enhancing community safety and resilience.
- Support for Data Science Team We offered ongoing support to Megaworld’s data science team, helping them extract insights from weather and environmental data and relate them to their existing real estate, sales, and operations data. This collaboration ensured that Megaworld could make informed decisions based on comprehensive and integrated data.
- Testing and Iteration Extensive testing was conducted to ensure the platform’s functionality, accuracy, and reliability. We worked closely with Megaworld to test various scenarios and workflows, making adjustments as needed to fine-tune the platform’s performance and user experience.
