Bringing Environmental Intelligence to Rice Fields through PhilRice and Komunidad’s Innovation
Overview
PhilRice, a government agency under the Department of Agriculture, focuses on developing technologies to support sustainable rice farming in the Philippines. To enhance the efficiency and safety of rice cultivation, PhilRice sought to implement an environmental monitoring, forecasting and early warning system across 25 key locations, providing farmers with localized insights for better decision-making.
Komunidad delivered a comprehensive environmental monitoring, forecasting and early warning system, including a threat monitoring dashboard, SMS weather alerts, and social media channels for disseminating updates. Training was also provided to system administrators, local leaders, and farmers to ensure effective use of the platform.
The Challenge
Rice farming is highly sensitive to weather conditions, with factors such as water supply, temperature, and wind having a direct impact on crop yield. Prior to this project, PhilRice used outdated methods and free services to monitor weather, leading to inconsistent and delayed information.
